Are you planning a wedding in the summer but don’t know where to start with ideas? Maybe you just can’t decide from all those great ideas floating around the internet? Not to worry, we’ve got some great ways you can tie all those ideas together to make a spectacular summer wedding!

To start with, are you going to have your wedding outdoors or indoors? If it’s outdoors, remember to check if your ceremony is legally binding. Under UK law, for a ceremony to be legally binding it must take place in an approved venue or registered religious building — you can’t simply set up in a field with a celebrant, though there are plans in the works to change that law so keep an eye out for more news! If you’re still going outdoors, there are tons of great outdoor venues available — Beamish Hall Hotel has a grand outdoor section exclusively for ceremonies, and Le Petit Chateau is also another popular choice for an outdoor wedding. Feel free to shop around a bit to find the right price that fits with your budget — summer weddings are right in the middle of the wedding season after all, meaning everything could be much pricier than usual. Outdoors in the summer is understandable (such wonderful weather shouldn’t be wasted!) but indoors can be great too; if you’re concerned about rain, you may find a venue like Alnwick Castle that has outdoor seating alongside part of the venue which lets you have the best of both worlds.

Whichever you choose, you can still keep that summery theme going. See if you can get thin, comfortable fabrics to account for the warm weather, or perhaps a shorter skirt to your dress compared to a long tulle. A shorter skirt to your dress can also help if you’re having your reception/wedding breakfast either in a field marquee or beach setting as it’s less likely to get caught on the environment. You can always accessorise in other ways as well; try adding a flower crown with (or without) your veil that goes with your bouquet and floral arrangements to really add a rustic summery feel to your outfit. You can choose from seasonal flowers such as daisies, hydrangeas, or marigolds, or you can simply go for a range of wildflowers to fit with a rustic theme. We’ve got a blog that delves deeper into rustic wedding themes if you want to see more on the subject and they can often meld together with summery styles but there are plenty more seasonal ideas that aren’t necessarily rustic!

Planning a reception/wedding breakfast in an outdoor marquee can lead to some great opportunities for summer activities! Why not have a go at creating some garden games people can have fun with like a good old fashioned carnival? Some games will be easy to make yourself, such as ball-in-the-bucket, tic-tac-toe on the grass, or ring toss, but for others you can shop around for suppliers that hire out great garden games you can use like giant Jenga, or a giant connect-4 game. On top of that, you can also hire amazing food vendors to serve snacks and small meals during your reception to give your wedding a kind of festival vibe. Ice cream carts decorated to look Victorian would go perfect with an afternoon tea setting, or you could simply hire a local ice cream van for a bit of fun to rekindle some childhood memories. You could hire other types of catering vans as well; crepe vans, pizza vans, even mobile bars! If your budget is tight however, you could always stick to a large barbecue for your guests or a buffet of light and chilled food options (sandwiches etc). There are options for your wedding cake decoration as well; a naked cake without icing would look great alongside an afternoon tea setting, whereas a semi-naked cake could be excellent for more rustic themes. A fully iced cake, however, has more options surrounding it — you could either go traditional white and minimal decoration, add seasonal flower decoration, or you could choose a watercolour-esque colouring of icing for a softer more elegant feel.

Finally, it’s important to make sure you’ve got contingencies ready for any weather. If your wedding is outdoors, try to create some shade for your guests and encourage them to wear suncream for safety. Also, be aware of bugs that may be attracted to any sweet things on your buffet table (or any perfumes in the air!) and have some environmentally friendly bug repellant on standby.

Hopefully, this helps you tie all your ideas together into one summery theme like we hoped — and do let us know about your ideas, we’d love to hear them!

See you next week.
