“Would you prefer indoors or outdoors? Maybe even a bit of both…”

If you’re dreaming of getting married in a barn or farm setting, have you thought about adding other rustic elements to your plans? Things like hessian table runners, flower crowns, bohemian dresses, fairy lights, even tipi tents could be added to give you that countryside vibe to your big day.

So what venue is on your mind? In the North East alone there are loads of barn and farm venues available for wedding bookings, such as High House Farm Brewery, The Parlour at Blagdon, and Northside Farm that could suit your tastes, but would you prefer indoors or outdoors? Maybe even a bit of both, with the ceremony outdoors and the wedding breakfast or reception indoors! If your venue allows outdoor weddings and you want to keep that countryside feel without going inside, you might want to look into hiring a tipi or marquee. These suppliers not only provide high-quality marquees but can also offer lighting and heating as optional extras (since you may have your own lighting etc) as well as dance floors to stop everyone getting dusty/muddy shoes, and some (like Roaming Tent Co) offer a firepit to really accentuate your rustic theme!

Whatever you choose, you can always involve a few fairy lights to give off a cute ambience; why not have a look into different shapes and sizes to see what suits your style best? For instance, you could have the classic small fairy lights or go bigger with larger bulbs hanging from the rafters of your marquee. You could even have them woven with personalised bunting celebrating your big day, along with flowers that go with your bouquet and buttonholes. To save on candelabra and candles, you could also decorate your long tables with hessian table runners and floral arrangements, filling in any empty spaces around the table, or if you’re having individual round tables you can add mason jars with battery-powered flickering tea lights to your floral centrepieces. We think there’s always something so magical about flickering tea lights, it creates such a wonderful atmosphere! There’s also signage to think about — if you’re having an outdoor wedding, it’d be a great idea to have signs to where each event is, especially if you’re using tents and marquees for different areas. Reach out to calligraphy suppliers or stationery suppliers and see what they can offer you; some even create signage on things as simple as wooden pallets which can really add to your rural aesthetic.

Have you thought about what style of cake you’d have? Fully covered tiered cakes are amazing and elegant, if you’re wanting to go for a more aesthetically pleasing decoration to fit your theme, we’d suggest going for a spectacular semi-naked cake with maybe a few floral decorations to add that bit of character. Of course, you could simply cut out the middleman and have a naked cake instead, which would be great if you wanted that afternoon tea kind of vibe at your wedding breakfast/reception buffet. If you can’t get the sugar flowers you want as decoration, you could always ask your florist if they could put a little decoration on the cake. Just remember to take them off before slicing it up and serving it to guests!

Finally, there’s the all-important thing to consider — your attire! Bohemian style dresses can really emphasise the countryside vibe and give you that picturesque look. Imagine how amazing you’ll look walking down the aisle with your dress flowing in as a gentle breeze blows by. Then later, when the sun is setting and the drinks are flowing, you see a flicker against the tipi tent as the patterns from the lace are painting the ceiling in a gorgeous glow from the candlelight. When you head out to try on wedding dresses, let someone at the bridal studio know about how you envision yourself on your wedding day — they’re sure to know the perfect dresses for you to try out! For those wearing suits on your wedding day, how do you feel about vests and waistcoats? Brown colours can always look great with a pop of light blue behind them, and there are plenty of ties and bow-ties to choose from to finish off that rustic look. Menswear tailors will be on hand to help you find the perfect material and colours to match your theme, just let them know the details and they’ll work their magic!
