A Makeup Artist is there to create the look you want, not the creations they’ve already done.

Hello! Let’s jump right into today’s conversation — makeup! So here’s a question for the bride and bridesmaids, once the priorities such as venues and wedding dresses are sorted, what’s the next thing you look into for you and your girls? Makeup and hair? Thought so! Here are some tips on finding the perfect makeup artist for YOU!

The first step to finding your makeup artist is to create a checklist; decide what type of look you are going for, budget, location and mobility. Look up their reviews as well — this will help you understand the impressions of the artist’s clients, their customer service and make-up skills. The makeup artist should be talented, reliable, trustworthy and hardworking.

Secondly, you want to do your homework. Research is just as important as communication when searching for the perfect makeup artist. If you don’t know any, then consider searching for different social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook or even google search — these are great ways to find experienced freelancers near you. You don’t always have to go online to find the right makeup artist; you might have a family or a friend that’s a freelancer or a professional makeup artist with years of experience who will do your makeup with discount, someone highly recommended with reasonable price. If you do go online, you might come across them on social media and see some of the great looks they’ve done. Either way, you want to choose a makeup artist suitable for YOU. When finding the ‘right makeup artist, you’ll have to think a lot more in-depth, for instance, distance factor, suitable makeup products, trial date availability These are a MUST when hiring a makeup artist.

If you’re from the North East, you’ll know this phrase -, ‘Shy bairns get nowt’! It means if you’re too shy and you don’t ask, you won’t get what you want. Communication is key when connecting with your artist and getting the best results available. If skincare is a priority and you’re unsure of the artist’s product suitability, don’t be afraid to ask. Your artist may provide specific brands or even ask to use your own skincare products, anything to make you comfortable in getting your makeup done. I know asking a lot of questions can seem tough sometimes, especially when you think an experienced makeup artist might have heard it all — however, you can’t afford to be held back when discussing your wedding day look. You are hiring the makeup artist to make you feel confident and look amazing on your wedding day, so answering questions shouldn’t be a burden to the makeup artist. In fact, it shows your interest in them, which in turn, will make the makeup artist confident in creating the exact look you want. Also, you are a paying client and you have to be 100% satisfied with your decision. If the artist is not completely on board with your choices and you feel you’re not getting your desired look, then it’s okay to look elsewhere.

When you’ve found your preferred makeup artist, — insist on arranging a trial. The aim of a trial is to find suitable products for your skin and create your chosen look. If you feel anything does not sit right, inform your makeup artist. You want to see your chosen look when you check yourself in the mirror and just before you walk down the aisle. Trial makeup is either included in the package or charged on the side. It’s very important that your makeup artist does a trial before your wedding day; there’s nothing worse than relying on a makeup artist who doesn’t know your skin type/foundation shade. They should dedicate some time getting an understanding of your features as well — skin type (oily, dry, or both), face shape (oval, round, etc.) and shade type (light, dark, etc).

If you have found your desired makeup artist, get in contact with them as soon as possible to check their availability, and don’t forget to discuss the above points.

Good luck with your search!
