It’s the month of June! As a brand that enjoys celebrating love, weddings, and happiness, we’re excited. June is pride month and a chance for us all to celebrate love, acceptance, and self-pride along with the LGBTQ+ community.

Starting in 1969, June has seen pride celebrations, rallies, and parties for over half a century. But how did it all begin? Why not in April or October? In the paragraphs below, we discuss details like this, the history of pride month, and why it’s celebrated.

History

For the longest time in the sixties, police often raided gay bars and arrested customers. They enter, threaten to beat up the staff, and then have customers line up outside to be arrested. That was until June 29th, 1969.

On this day in June, the police raided Stonewall Inn, which was located on Christopher Street in Manhattan. They arrested about 13 people, many of which were gay men of colour or drag queens. But this time, the LGBTQ+ community fought back.

There were riots that lasted over several days, and this helped to spark the modern-day LGBTQ+ civil rights movements. That day has since been considered one of the pivotal days for the LGBTQ+ family. The area around Stonewall Inn where the riots happened has also been made a national monument.

When many years later, in June of 2015, same-sex marriages were legalised, it was the perfect crowning. Since then, you’ll witness a different hue in the sky every June. Many businesses fly rainbow flags to commemorate pride month as a memorial of the victories and the struggles. They also celebrate Pride day, which is June 27th.

To this, we say, why not? Many members of the LGBTQ+ community have been repressed and conflicted for a long time. We should celebrate them learning to come and be proud of themselves. Pride month gives us the opportunity to do that more.

Celebrating Pride in the month of June also gives an opportunity to recognise the works of LGBTQ+ people. It is a great time to discuss issues affecting the community and find solutions moving forward. Pride month is a chance to come together in love and friendship.
