National Gluten-Free Day| Gluten-Free Snack Ideas
Curating a gluten-free diet can be tricky, but it is necessary for those with Celiac disease. Whether you have to live a gluten-free life or not, you can help to bring awareness to this lifestyle.
National Gluten-Free day is tomorrow. Are you excited? It’s celebrated on Jan 13, and if you’ve not paid attention to it before, this is the time to start. Gluten rose to popularity in social consciousness some years back.
However, some people are still in the dark about it. Consider this an opportunity to learn a lot more about it. We’ll speak a bit about it here, but you can read up more by yourself, and we encourage you to do so.
· What Is Gluten?
Gluten is a type of protein that you’ll find in barley, oats, rye, triticale, and wheat. It holds the food together, by reacting to liquids, resulting in a stretchy quality. You can find these grains in other forms like bread, pasta, baked goods, and cereals. Gluten is a no-no for people who have celiac disease.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine of those with it if they consume gluten. As a result, these people must remain gluten-free. Sometimes family members and friends will join them in solidarity which is admirable.
· National Gluten-Free Day
First organized in 2014, National Gluten-Free Day aims to bring awareness to a gluten-free lifestyle. Curating a gluten-free diet can be tricky, but it is necessary for those with Celiac disease. Whether you have to live a gluten-free life or not, you can help to bring awareness to this lifestyle.
Here are some lovely gluten-free snack ideas that you can use to do just that.
· Popcorn, Fruit, Chocolate, And Nuts
We all love popcorn for movies, but did you know it’s gluten-free? This whole grain is also a great source of fibre and can help you feel fuller. For this snack celebrating Gluten-Free Day, you can pair it with fruit, chocolate, and peanuts.
Lightly drizzle your popcorn with melted dark chocolate and add some dried fruit. Then include roasted peanuts. These will improve the taste and act as a great source of healthy fats and protein.
Some of the dried fruits you can use for this snack include cherries or cranberries. They are also excellent sources of fibre like popcorn. Remember to check that everything is certified free of gluten.
· Cucumber and Hummus Gluten-Free Rolls
Hummus is a lovely and protein-rich dip that is great for sandwiches. It is made from chickpeas and sesame seeds which are ground together. You can order a premade gluten-free option for this meal and get a dip that is just as delicious.
For this snack, make mini sandwiches with hummus spread on slices of cucumber. The slices should be thick and round for the best results. You can then cover with another piece of cucumber or serve the delicacy as single slices with hummus.
· Yogurt Parfait with Granola
We love this snack idea because most times, lactose-intolerant people can enjoy it in moderation. You see, many yoghurts contain live and active cultures, which helps the body break down lactose quickly.
You’ll have to use plain Greek yoghurt, fruits, granola, and nuts for this snack idea. Alternate the layers for the best results. Yoghurt is also really good for people with celiac disease as it’s an easy way for them to get calcium. This is a mineral that many of them lack due to the disease.
· Crunchy Stuffed Dates
Gluten-free diets sometimes mean less fibre. This could lead to constipation, which is why many of our snack ideas like this one are rich in fibre. Dates are known to aid the digestive system.
For this snack, you’ll be filling dates with crunchy peanut butter, chopped walnuts, and coconut flakes. Please make sure that the dates you use are gluten-free. They are naturally free of gluten but sometimes could be processed with oat flour which has gluten.
· Sweet Potato Chips Served with Tzatziki Sauce
Tzatziki is a delicious yoghurt and cucumber dip, it is available premade and, most importantly, is gluten-free. You can use this to serve sweet potato chips, which is an excellent source of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is vital and beneficial for everyone, it supports many important processes in the body.
You can order chips or make yours for this snack. To do so, cut your potatoes into thin slices and then toss them with olive oil and sea salt. Once done, spread them on a pan and bake for 25 minutes at 400℉ (204℃).
· Pear Drizzled with Dark Chocolate
Pears are a delicious source of fibre and are our last suggestion for gluten-free snacks that you can serve. For this option, melted dark chocolate that is gluten-free should be drizzled over the sliced pear.
You can also include crushed walnuts in this idea as they are a great source of protein and healthy fat. You can also use unsweetened almond butter as a dip for your pear slices. They can be very delicious too.
Gluten-free Day is an important celebration, and you can celebrate it with the above snack ideas. The key is to choose something packed with fibre, vitamins, and also minerals. You can also easily make most of these ideas at home. Can you think of any other lovely gluten-free snack ideas?
