International Women’s Day || #Breakthebias
Celebrated on the 8th of March every year, International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to recognise women’s contribution to society. The theme for this year is #breakthebias.
International Women’s Day is about living in a world free of stereotypes, discrimination and bias. We would all benefit from a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse society. This holiday helps us to pause, evaluate and measure how much we’re improving.
Have you celebrated International Women’s day before? If yes, how? Below is a brief history of how this holiday came to be. We’ve also included some ways that you can use it to celebrate the special women in your life.
History
International Women’s Day has its root in America back in 1909. This was when the socialist party decided to honour the garment workers who protested the year before. These women wanted to stop the inhumane working conditions they were forced to endure. They called this celebration National Women’s Day, and it took place on the 28th of February.
By the following year, Women’s day was also established in Copenhagen, and from there, it spread to Austria, Germany and Switzerland. By 1911 the first official day was celebrated on the 19th of March. Over a million people attended the various rallies organised.
As time went on, more European countries joined the celebrations but chose to do so on the 8th of March. In 1975, the United Nations then decided to celebrate it as an official holiday to recognise women all over.
