“The world is filled with geeks with many different styles and preferences — with plenty of ways to incorporate these passions in their wedding day!”

Geek culture has been around for a long time, for as long there has been science fiction and fantasy in the world. The etymology of geek is super interesting too; in North America during the 19th century, the term geek referred to a performer in a geek show in a circus, travelling carnival or travelling funfair sideshows, and the American Heritage Dictionary included only the definition regarding geek shows in 1976. According to a Wikipedia article centred on Geeks, Julie Smith defined a geek as “a bright young man turned inward, poorly socialized, who felt so little kinship with his own planet that he routinely travelled to the ones invented by his favourite authors, who thought of that secret, dreamy place his computer took him to as cyberspace”. The 90s sitcom Family Matters had what was thought to be the archetype of geeks with Steve Urkel, but our own self-proclaimed geek (team member Erin) reassures us that nowadays, the world is filled with geeks with different styles and preferences — with plenty of ways to incorporate their passions in their wedding day!

Let’s start off with stationery — not just cards and invitations but also laser cut wood, something tactile that your guests will love to receive. Not only that, but you can find suppliers like Hedgepig Alternative Designs who craft their cards to be fun and enjoyable to own. Whether it’s Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter howlers, there’s a wide variety of things on hand! Try including something with your favourite tv show or movie in mind — maybe even a book series?

The wedding invitation or save-the-date is the first thing your guests will see in relation to your big day, so showing off your passion like this is a great way for your guests to get a peek into what your wedding will be like when it comes.

You can also incorporate your geeky passions into your outfit as well. If your budget doesn’t allow for a really expensive dress, you can always commission an artist to paint your shoes, handbag and accessories like below! Artist Sarah Woods is a great example of suppliers with the power to bring your passion to life and really emphasise your themed wedding! Not only that, accessories like these will last a long time, providing you with long-lasting memories of your special day. If you do have the budget for an awesome dress, go for it! It’s your wedding your way and you should dress in whatever makes you happy. If that means dressing like an elvish princess, then don’t hesitate and do it — your wedding day is incredibly important to you, and it should be your dream come true, don’t let nerves and anxiety get in the way of letting you spread your passion on your big day! That goes for all the grooms of the world too by the way; there are plenty of bow ties, suspenders, cufflinks, suits, all ready to be specialised for your tastes!

If you’re looking to go a step further, when you organise your photographer why not ask them what kind of photo op ideas they have to include your theme? It could be as simple as having a stormtrooper escort, or more dynamic like staged sword battle!

Discuss these ideas with your photographer and see what the both of you can come up with — maybe they have an idea you hadn’t thought of, or they know of a way to hire some costumes for your photo op. Either way, it’s another helpful hand to get that dream wedding you want and deserve.

On top of that, there are loads of creative cake bakers across the UK that craft stunning cakes that you almost don’t want to cut into! How about a book-shaped cake, with cake toppers of you and your partner as wizards? Or maybe lego versions of each other? There are so many routes you can go down, and as long as the cake itself is delicious you’ll never worry about cutting into it. It doesn’t even have to be a massive cake — as long as you love it, it’ll be perfect! A great example of a novelty cake is this amazing Back to the Future cake by Sticky Sponge; a fantastic cake with amazing detail and a tasty interior!

The best thing with novelty cakes is that you can go for either modelling sugar for the figures or you can go for plastic and keep them as a memory of your big day. They’d look perfect on your mantle-piece, or even in your display cabinet if you have one!
