A lot of people approach gender differently than the usual binary of feminine and masculine. Some people choose one or the other, some people choose to move between them, and some choose neither. These people may identify as non-binary, or gender-fluid, or may simply choose to remain androgynous without any gender label applying to them and that’s okay! However, since the traditional wedding attire is dresses and suits, this can provide a mild bit of stress on a genderqueer person as seeing white dresses and masculine suits being advertised can make it confusing to know what to wear. We believe that you shouldn’t have to conform to what you think is the ‘right’ thing to wear, and instead wear what makes you feel most comfortable on your wedding day — if that means denim overalls and trainers then so be it! Your wedding will still be as perfect as you’d dreamed it would be. If denim overalls aren’t your thing and you’re still looking for things to wear, we’ve got a good few suggestions to help you on the path to finding your perfect wedding attire.

There are plenty of options to choose from depending on your style. It could be simply a different coloured dress with less feminine tones and frills, or a masculine suit, or even a suit and tie necklace. You could go for a shirt, blazer and trouser combo with smart shoes (loads of places offer a wide selection of sizes for shoes in both feminine and masculine styles) and keep the blazer open, with a smattering of jewelry around your neck and/or ears. Suits can also be worn with shorts instead of smart trousers, which can be excellent for a summer outdoor wedding! If loose shirts aren’t your style, you could always go for a buttoned-up collar and quirky bowtie — maybe even a waistcoat if you’d like, or suspenders if that’s more your fashion style.

An alternative to the classic suit can be a more feminine style of suit, which can also fit with the traditions of wearing white to the wedding. By having a white suit with soft silk and lace you may feel more in touch with your feminine side whilst still having those androgynous or masculine styles combined into your own personal look. The lace can either be on the top or on the trousers (as in the image) and your choice of footwear is entirely up to you. Would you rather heels, boots, or flat shoes? Perhaps some cute Mary-Janes or some sturdy Doc Martens? Either way, it’s entirely up to you!

Make-up is another factor to consider, though no one should feel forced to put on make-up if it makes them uncomfortable. Similarly, no one should be made to feel uncomfortable if they do choose to wear make-up. Everyone is unique and deserves respect! You can choose a naked look for your big day, with simple make-up that amplifies your natural beauty, or you can go for something more dramatic to emphasise your personality. If you don’t want to go for make-up but still desire an essence of femininity in your look, how about decorating and styling your beard? You could, of course, go for a masculine style and shave, or you could go a little further and think about dying your beard a different colour — perhaps even add a touch of glitter or accessories to make you stand out from the crowd even further!

On top of that, it’s worth noting that men can also wear dresses that suit their style, no matter what other people may think. Clothes are not dedicated to one specific gender, and we believe people should be free to dress as they see fit without comment or speculation. For instance, a great accessory to wear with your wedding attire can be flower crowns — they can be seasonal, beautiful, and be a great environmentally-friendly accessory that both accentuates your natural beauty and brings out the rustic theme in your attire. Flower crowns are flexible enough that they can suit any gender, but we understand if you’d choose to not wear one as they can give off a feminine vibe and that isn’t to everyone’s tastes. However, if you choose to wear one nonetheless, we think you’ll look absolutely stunning!

Everyone, all genders, deserve a wonderful life and (if they choose to want one) an amazing wedding day. No matter the choice you choose for your attire, please don’t choose something that you think will fit what other people want from you. Choose for yourself, and don’t let us or anyone else dictate your fashion style. We’re here to help, not to tell you what to wear!
