Celebrating The Month Of Pride
‘This month is Pride month, where we celebrate the LGBTQ+ communities all around the world!’
Happy pride month everyone! A month where we celebrate those who fought for equality, for their human rights and for their existence to not be a crime! If you’re unaware as to why we celebrate pride this month, let’s take a look at the history behind Stonewall Inn. Before 1973, the US classed same-sex relationships as a mental illness, the community was constantly threatened, beaten up by the police and humiliated by many people they would walk past. It wasn’t until the late 60’s that the community got fed up with the abuse, fought for their equal rights and put homophobia to an end!
It started on the 29th of June 1969, in New York City. A bar called Stonewall Inn was known within the gay community as a place to enjoy their drinks and dance till there was no tomorrow, which got interrupted by the police, raiding the bar and shouting abuse at them all. A week after that raid happened, the police proceeded to raid the bar again — but this time the community had had enough and chose to fight back. Multiple riots and protests happened within that month and it inspired other people outside of the LGBTQ+ community to join and help protest against homophobia. Word spread across the nation about the riot and others joined to help protest too. Months after the riot, a gay march was arranged in New York City, demanding their rights for equality.
Did you know? The first pride had happened on 28th June 1970, a year after the riot happened in NYC. The parade began on Washington Place between Sheridan Square and Sixth Avenue and moved up Sixth Avenue, ending in Central Park. A lot has changed throughout the years because of yearly protests. In 2008, the UK officially made it illegal to encourage homophobic hatred and the most recent is 2013, where gay marriage was officially legal in England and Wales! The progress for the community has been outstanding, but there is still a long way left to go.
To help us celebrate a little differently due to the Coronavirus and Social distancing. Here are some beautiful wedding couples celebrating their special day:
