National Spouses Day is one of two holidays recognized worldwide that focuses on couples. The second is Valentine’s day. It is celebrated on January 26th and is a lovely chance to appreciate your soul mate.

As a brand that deals with couples, Uplanit understands how relationships require work and intentionality. We also know that it’s easy to get used to a routine that you need to break out of every now and then, especially when married. National Spouses Day is an opportunity to do so in a unique and memorable way.

So, what is National Spouse Day? How is it any different from Valentine’s, and how do couples celebrate it? As you know, we love to share the best things with you, so you’ll find answers to these and more below.

  • History

As with many holidays, no one exactly knows when National Spouses Day became a thing. Some people, however, believe that it is linked to Military Spouses Day, which was established in 1984. It became popular around the start of the millennium and has been observed since then.

Whatever the case, National Spouse Day is officially celebrated in the US and the UK. Some offices even advise couples to take the day off and spend time with their partner. Many brands do surveys on couples on the day, and people post pictures of their spouses on Twitter with the hashtag #NationalSpouseDay.

  • Difference Between National Spouses Day and Valentine

While both National Spouses Day and Valentine’s Day are about couples, there are some differences. The first is, of course, that they are both celebrated on different days. As we all know, Valentine is on February 14th (What plans do you have for that? It’s never too early to start!)

National Spouses Day is also more about spending time with your partner than about gifts. So, couples are generally advised to spend time alone with each other and reflect on their relationship. Hold hands, cuddle and be romantic; studies have shown that contact improves your personal lives and relationship.

  • 6 Ways to Celebrate National Spouses Day

No gift-giving??? Are you panicking? Well, you shouldn’t; there are many ways to show your partner you love them without having to buy chocolate and flowers. Here are six wonderful ways to celebrate National Spouses Day with your partner.

Give Your Partner A Compliment

This is first because although it is obvious, many people neglect it. Compliment the feature on your partner that you love the most. And no, we’re not talking about their work ethic or how well they cook or clean.

Everyone likes to feel attractive and noticed. So, what do you find appealing about your partner? Their eyes? Their smile? For this, you have to take your time, really look at them and choose your words. They’ll be on cloud nine all day!

Visit Where You First Met

If possible, take a trip to the location where you first met. It could also be somewhere special, like where you had your first date or shared your first kiss. It’s a great way to remind each other of how far you’ve come.

Look Back on Your Wedding Day

The longer you’ve been married, the more fun this will be. Talk about your wedding look through your wedding album. You’ll discover that the things that didn’t go according to plan and gave you the most stress then will make you laugh now. That’s a great lesson to learn about life.

Choose Pictures to Display Around Your House

Staying on the wedding idea, do you have pictures around your house? If the answer is no, it’s time to choose and display those lovely photos. So, select a few with your partner, get them printed, frame, and put them on show.

Talk About Your Favorite Moments With Each Other

You’ll forget these moments and how they made you feel unless you relive them regularly. The human mind is fascinating that way. Evolution has made it such that it’s easier to remember things that hurt you than the things that made you feel fantastic.

So, make you’re intentional about discussing your favourite moments with each other this year. Talk about it in detail and commit to doing this more regularly. If you have a wedding day memory card, this is one day to pull it out.

Make Your Date Night Jar

This is another fun activity that you can do on National Spouses Day. For this, you and your partner will write down your ideas of what would be a fun date night on a piece of paper. Do lots of these, fold and put them in a jar.

Whenever you feel out of ideas, reach in and do whatever you pick. Leave the ideas a secret, so you get pleasant surprises whenever you take them from the jar. Stuck on ideas? How does a visit to a hotel close to your wedding venue for a weekend staycation sound?

National Spouses Day is about appreciating and thanking your partner for how great they are. It’s a lovely way to refresh your love and spend quality time with each other. How will you be celebrating the day with your partner this year? Feel free to let us know, but till then,

See you next week!
