“You don’t need to have a veil — you could even wear a velvet cape or cloak!”

Traditions around weddings are simple — white dress, church weddings, suits for the men, ceremony, dinner, then party with wedding cake. There’s a wide variety of products and services for traditional weddings to help it feel more unique, but what if you want to take it a step further?

We at UPlanIt think your wedding should be unique to you and your partner. If that means replacing traditional things, then we say go for it! Add a bit of colour to that white dress, investigate different styles of suit, and think of something you can add to your event that really represents YOU. If you like Halloween, maybe add pumpkin centrepieces for your tables, turn fallen leaves into confetti with a hole-punch, and use low-cost decorations from discount shops. Alternatively, if you want to spend a little more on your special day, why not investigate some non-traditional themes?

One thing you could add is a gorgeous wine red and black bouquet with some sparkling skulls, or an autumnal theme of oranges, yellows and reds. You could even go for a purple and black look, but it is advisable to have something similar to your dress, and veil if you have one. Obviously, you don’t need to have a veil — you could even wear a velvet cape or cloak!

There are also many types of dresses to choose from; a corset dress would add style an emphasise your physique, and the accompanying skirt with corset can be fun to spin around in. This dress is a mermaid style gown, meaning the dress is close to your body and then extends out at the bottom. A gorgeously gothic dress made by House of Avalonia named the Alannah dress, it includes sparkly features, lace and a wonderful black veil. If big gothic styles aren’t your thing, you could go with a halterneck dress with a short hem, to go for more of a rockabilly style — good for dancing in, and excellent for showing off any tattoos you have! There’s also the option of having a train at the end of your dress, making your entrance into the ceremony spectacular. They often come with loops to attach to your wrist so that it won’t be stood on when you start dancing later, so you don’t have to worry about falling over during your first dance with your partner.

If you still fancy the thought of a beautiful white dress, why not incorporate one of your hobbies into your wedding day?

If you have a photographer lined up, try asking about photoshoots involving something you love in your life (besides your partner of course!). For example, Frayed Edge Concepts gave skater “Pinky La Pain” an amazing Roller Derby-themed photoshoot with her team! We think this is a great idea since it involves her passion and her teammates — people she skated with, bruised with and lived with. Remember, a photoshoot for your wedding day doesn’t necessarily have to involve your partner, it could involve your bridal party and celebrating the things you love with the people you love. It’s your wedding day; you should both have what makes you happy!

If that’s not to your taste, remember that you can involve anything you want into your wedding! The only rules of a wedding day are in the ceremony and legalities of marriage — everything else is up to you both! If you’re planning a winter wedding, why not add some knitted or crocheted accessories to keep warm? There are loads of suppliers like Caroline’s Creations ready to take your measurements and bring some gorgeous woollen garments to you. Add some arm warmers to keep cosy, a special skull shawl, or some lovely gloves. Remember to take those gloves off for the ring though!

It’s your wedding, YOUR way, and you’re doing it together with your partner. Don’t take tradition because you feel you have to; do it because you want it, and if you don’t want it, well you’ve got some good ideas under your belt now!
