Do you have plans to join in the Cinco De Mayo celebrations this year? We’d love to help you celebrate it in a meaningful and fun way. Here’s everything you should know about Cinco De Mayo and how to join in the festivities this 2022.
History
Sometimes, people confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexico’s Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the battle between Mexico and France in Puebla.
In 1862 Mexico had been going through a hard time. They couldn’t pay royalties to the European governments as usual. In response, the French sent an army of 6000 experienced soldiers to invade the Mexican city of Puebla de Los Angeles. Mexico could only raise 2000 soldiers.
Being the underdogs in the fight and led by a general who was only 33 years old, nobody expected a Mexican victory. However, by daybreak, the French had lost many soldiers and had to retreat.
Once Americans and Latinos heard about this defeat, they were so excited that many held parades. One town in Northern California even celebrated with food and drinks. This is noted as the first Cinco de Mayo celebration for many people.
Why Cinco De Mayo Is Celebrated
The Mexican army beat incredible odds in a way that was almost unbelievable! They were a rag-tag army with outdated guns and defeated a French army of 6000 soldiers within 12 hours. Their commander had even been born in Texas.
Over the years, however, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican heritage. This is especially true for Mexicans in other countries around the world. It is a huge source of pride and is very popular in cities like Los Angeles, San Antonio, and Chicago.
How Cinco De Mayo Is Celebrated
One of the largest celebrations of Cinco de Mayo happens in Denver every May 5. Some estimations put attendance at around 400,000 people in events that last two days. Cinco de Mayo is even official in the United States.
In Puebla, where the battle took place, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with a military parade. Inhabitants dress as both the French and Mexican army and reenact the battle at the original site. There is also a celebration with drinks and food alongside brightly coloured floats.
In Puebla, the meal for the commemoration of Cinco de Mayo is Mole Poblano. It is a lovely sauce made with chilli, chocolate, and other ingredients served over chicken. There is also a 2-day festival known as the Mole festival where chefs explain how to make the ultimate mole.
In London, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with specialised meals and by the Mexican community. Bars also use the opportunity to host events. Lovely drink deals are offered with cocktails that are Mexican-inspired.
