“Before the printing press was invented in 1447, weddings in England would be announced by the Town Crier…”

Wedding invitations have been around for a long time. According to lovetoknow.com, there are even documented cases of wedding invitations found in caves! Before the printing press was invented in 1447, weddings in England would be announced by the Town Crier. This was a man who walked around the town announcing various things, and inviting the town to the wedding was one of his duties — not a very personal touch but not much could be done really; anyone who heard the crier was invited to the event. In the Middle Ages, most folks were illiterate and therefore the practice of sending written luxury wedding invitations was something reserved for the nobility of the land. Families would commission monks (who were skilled in the art of calligraphy) to hand-craft their notices, including a Coat of Arms or personal crest, and seal with wax. The tradition of announcing weddings in the newspaper was established because of the poor results from the luxury printing presses, despite their development. Printed wedding invitations became more mainstream around 1642 with the invention of metal-plate engraving and as development increased throughout history (the invention of Lithography in the Industrial Revolution for example). It wasn’t until after the speed of industrial growth after World War II that everyone gained the ability to acquire and send out luxury wedding invitations. Nowadays there are loads of stationery suppliers ready to personalise your amazing invitations and save-the-dates, and we’ve decided to showcase ten amazing stationery suppliers from the North East!
