“Cake decoration and baking is an art in itself…”

There’s a vast history behind wedding cakes, starting around Ancient Rome. Reader’s Digest says “Wedding cakes have their roots in Ancient Rome, when marriage ceremonies ended with a scone-like wheat or barley cake broken over the bride’s head for luck and fertility.” Of course, that’s a far cry from the sweet frosted treats we have today! It wasn’t until the seventeenth century that the tradition turned towards cake-ier themes, and in the eighteenth century the trend of tiered cakes began catching on. To be honest, we love a good cake, no matter what it’s celebrating! Cake decoration and baking is an art in itself that is perfected by the most patient of people and artistic designers, so we thought we’d show our appreciation to the craft by showcasing 10 amazing cakes made by suppliers in the North East!

Three tiered cake with floral decoration

Cakes by Emma

This gorgeous cake was created by Emma O’Hara, the owner of Cakes by Emma. We love the floral arrangement and icing decoration, helping the design pop out from the norm but still, give a great modern look to a beautiful traditional wedding cake. Plus, according to her website; “Each cake is made to order using the finest ingredients, fairtrade and locally sourced where possible.” so you can be sure that your cake will be made with the best of ingredients! We think that’s what every good cake should be — looking great and tasting great!

Cherry Blossom Cakes

Take a peek at this beautiful minimalist cake by Cherry Blossom Cakes! Really taking after their namesake with a cute cherry blossom branch lying across the three tiers. The pastel colours are wonderfully complimented by the rose gold border around the top and bottom tier, a lovely stylish look. Their website says “Our cakes are always baked as close to your wedding date as the decoration will allow to ensure that your cake is as fluffy, light and moist as possible!”

Baked Cupcakery

Baked Cupcakery creates a lot of cupcakes decorated with brand logos for companies, but they also do spectacular wedding cakes like these! This photo is taken from their Instagram page, a [gorgeous] gold leaf decorated three-tier cake, with a perfectly smooth finish around the tiers. We love the colour choices in this cake, the green brings a natural vibe to the cake, while the gold leaf has a more ornate feel, and together they combine into a pleasant and chic design. On their website, they say “At Baked we love weddings, and the main reason is the cake! We believe that wedding cakes not only need to look fabulous, but taste absolutely delicious too.” If their cakes look this good, they must taste wondrous!

Loulabelle’s Occasions

You don’t often see a lot of square cakes these days, and this gorgeous four-tiered wedding cake is a welcome sight! We love the chain border around the bottom of each tier, giving the cake that traditional wedding look alongside the cubed effect. The flowers look almost real, as though you could smell them when you went to take a slice! Their website says “All of our cakes will be made to your specifications down to the finest detail to suit your individual style and taste, any shape, size & design.” What more can you ask for?

Miss Jane’s Cakes and Events

Definitely one of my favourites. Love a hidden cake” We do too! What a great way to combine your partner’s passions on your wedding day. Of course, you don’t have to have a superhero theme, but placing it next to a mirror seems perfect for this type of decoration! Especially if you keep one half in front and the other facing the mirror. What a lovely secret for your guests to discover, and entertaining for any kids arriving at your wedding as well!

Pet Lamb Patisserie

Look at that gorgeous gradient! Those floral swirls of frosting look like they took a lot of patience to create, especially since it surrounds the entire cake. The bakers, best friends Katie and Kay, are set up in the Grainger Market as Pet Lamb Patisserie, baking delicious treats every day and available for cake orders! Their website says “You’ll still find the girls working hard in their Grainger Market shop to bring you guys delicious small batch treats 6 days a week. Always baked on site and always baked fresh, you can rely on these sugar covered lasses to brighten up even the dreariest day.

Sara’s Kitchen

Have you ever considered a naked cake? It’s a style of cake decoration where there’s less frosting around the tiers, giving the cake a more rustic look. If you use a wooden cake stand such as the one created by Sara’s Kitchen, it’ll be the perfect accompaniment. The flower decoration makes us think of wildflower fields in the countryside, and the added icing drips add a dash of fun to the design. Sara says on her website that “she’s most proud of the feedback she gets from our customers, and creating relationships with our couples is the most important thing to her,” which is wonderful, especially for couples nervous about their big day! It’s great to have such a rewarding relationship between customer and baker.

Sticky Sponge

Wow! Words fail us seeing a cake decoration as grand as this! This amazing design comes from Sticky Sponge, who create a wide range of cakes to suit your tastes. Traditional wedding cakes, hand-painted cakes, engagement cakes, and unique cakes such as the one above! A sponge cake where the topper is made of modelling sugar, meaning even the owls are edible. Their website says “We create a unique cake designed specifically for you. Either to reflect your personalities and to fit in with your special day or just look amazing!” Use your imagination and consult with Sticky Sponge to see if you can get that spectacular cake for your big day.

Sugarfun Cake Artistry

What an incredibly gothic cake! This photo was taken at the Not So Average Wedding Fair from SugarFun Cake Artistry’s stand, where Sandra (the owner) informed us that the only part of the cake that wasn’t edible was the feathers — how amazing is that? Not only can she create such intricate designs, nothing goes to waste with the cake. This kind of cake really makes a statement at your wedding, and can really show off your unique style. Her comments on the cake from her Facebook page say “Apart from the feathers, this black chocolate beauty is totally edible and all handmade in sugar & chocolate, with an anatomically correct heart ( with “I Love You With All My Heart” on the arrow) — and who doesn’t love a cute li’l vampire bat or two?

Truly Scrumptious

A very autumnal looking cake from Truly Scrumptious, really does look truly scrumptious! The wooden design on the icing is amazing and the flowers compliment the cake. We love the romantic idea of carving your initials and date into a tree to last. It’s a lovely sentiment, and much better than carving into an actual tree! Truly Scrumptious have their showroom in Whitley Bay if you want to see more and arrange a free appointment to come up with your ideal cake. Their website proudly says “Our wedding cakes and special occasion cakes not only look fabulous but taste delicious too and are highly recommended by some of the most prestigious top venues, wedding planners and wedding services in the area and we work together with many of the finest florists and wedding event teams.

Of course, there are loads of cake suppliers in the North East making amazing celebration cakes for events, but we only have so much space at a time to talk about them! Have you gotten inspiration from these cake designs? Let us know about your dream cake for your wedding, or if you have a spectacular cake from your wedding, we’d love to see it! See you next week.
